The English and language arts master’s program is designed for current educators who want to expand their knowledge in current language arts pedagogy, learn new strategies to better accommodate the diversity of their students, and provide leadership in English and language arts education.

A master’s in education can move you up the payscale, as this degree demonstrates mastery of specialized subject matter, as well as dedication to the art of education. Graduates are positioned to advance their careers in jobs like instructional coach, master teacher, department head, or language arts curriculum coordinator. They can also apply their coursework to a teaching position at a junior or community college (though state requirements may apply). The master’s in English and language arts education online program is guided by the Standards for the English Language Arts, published jointly by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Literacy Association, which are the United States’ premier organizations for English language arts and literacy educators.

Curriculum

This innovative program requires 33 credit hours total, which consists of:

  • Program core courses in English language arts pedagogy (24 hours)
  • Additional coursework (6 hours)
  • One capstone course (3 hours)

Students can earn this degree while simultaneously fulfilling their professional obligations for continuing education. Teachers in Iowa can apply credits earned in this course towards ongoing learning requirements for maintaining their licensure, and may also attain the State of Iowa English All endorsement by pursuing the required courses available in this program. Applicants must submit proof of an unexpired teaching license in at least one U.S. state.
