Brian Hand
Professor

Brian’s research focuses on two major areas. The first is on how we can use language as a learning tool to improve students’ understanding of science. His work has focused on using writing as a learning tool and is now moving to focus on the use of multi-modal representation within science classrooms.

Matthew Lira
Matthew Lira
Clinical Assistant Professor

Matthew Lira’s research seeks to improve understanding of the generative role that mathematics plays in scientific discovery and individual learning. Toward this aim, he examines how upper division undergraduate biology students explain quantified biological phenomena and how they design and interpret mathematical models that describe these same phenomena. His research utilizes clinical interviewing techniques, human-computer interaction and think-aloud studies, and experimental approaches.
